How to Make Aromatherapy Bath Salt

Aromatherapy bath salts are a wonderful way to turn a simple bath into a spa-like experience of relaxation and rejuvenation. But the price you have to pay for high quality aromatherapy bath salts might make you tense all over again! So, why not utilize a free afternoon and make your own aromatherapy bath salts?

There are some pretty complex recipes on the web, but if you look around, you can find simpler variations. An example of a simple recipe calls for 3 cups of Epsom salts (usually found on online pharmacies selling for $5 per 96 oz. bag), 2 cups of baking soda, and 1 cup of salt. Stir these ingredients together in a large bowl.

Now color your bath salts by adding drops of food coloring. Think about how you want to feel in the bath. If you want to feel passionate and energized, then consider coloring your bath salts red or orange. If you would rather feel refreshed, then green might be the color for you. Opting to be relaxed and soothed, then consider blue. Or, throw color and mood studies to the wind and just add your favorite color and continue adding color until you get a shade you like.

Next, add the essential oil(s) of your choice. The essential oil may be the only thing difficult to find in this aromatherapy bath salt recipe. Some bath and body shops carry them, as do many privately owned New Age stores. You’re also likely to find them at health food stores and you can definitely find a wide variety online.

As with the color, the oil that you add can influence your mood. A mint scent, like spearmint or peppermint will energize you and get you ready to go; whereas a lavender scent will calm you and lower your heart rate. You can do more research on the moods evoked by different scents on internet sites dealing with aromatherapy. Don’t be shy about adding lots of scent to your bath salts. The stronger the scent, the less you will need to use for each bath, and the longer your aromatherapy bath salts will last.

Aromatherapy Bath Salts: A Wonderful Gift!

Once you’ve got the recipe down pat, consider making aromatherapy bath salts as gifts for your friends and family. Deliciously-scented bath salts in brand new jar, tied with a crisp new ribbon make wonderful birthday and holiday presents. As an extra treat, you can pass the recipe along to the recipients so they can make more bath salts if they want to. Your recipients may also enjoy hearing which oil you picked for them and why.

Since bath salts last a long time, you can even keep a couple of jars on hand in case you forget someone’s birthday and need to find a gift quickly. No more running to the store at midnight. That’s a stress reliever in itself.
